On various photo blogs and forums there are always questions on which is the best lens, camera etc. for travel photography. For the average person who wants high quality photographs of their travels to post on the Internet or have 10 x 8 inch prints a high quality compact or mirrorless camera will more than suffice. When I am on assignment with two or three DSLR bodies and various lenses my camera bag weighs in at 15 kilogrammes.
So I decided to post ten of my photographs taken with Nikon Coolpix’s P6000 & P7000 and the Nikon 1’s V1 & V2. The heaviest of these is the Nikon 1 V1 & 30-110mm lens (81-297mm 35mm equivalent) which weighs in at 563gm (19.86oz). The new Nikon 1 V2 with the same lens is lighter at 458gm (16.15oz).
So before you rush out after mortgaging your house to buy the most expensive camera equipment because you think that by having the best you will automatically get the best photographs, think. What do you want to achieve with your photography? Are the above photographs of good enough quality for you to have wonderful memories of your travels? So it’s up to you – 15kg to lug around or 500grams. At least the 500grams wont be left behind in your hotel room when you go for an evening stroll through the local village.
