Our first stop in Germany on our recent journey was Heidelberg. We were there for only three days and unfortunately the weather was atrocious as it snowed and rained the whole time. However, Heidelberg is a charming city and one that I would love to visit again, preferably in the Spring or Autumn.
Heidelberg is a city situated in the south-west of Germany and lies on the River Neckar in a steep valley in the Odenwald.. The fifth-largest city in the State of Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart, Mannheim, Karlsruhe and Freiburg im Breisgau, Heidelberg is part of the densely populated Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. Its population of only 150,000 makes it a small city that is easy to walk around.
A former residence of the Electorate of the Palatinate, Heidelberg is the location of Heidelberg University, well known far beyond Germany’s borders. Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination due to its romantic and picturesque cityscape, including Heidelberg Castle and the baroque style Old Town.
If you are visiting Germany or northern France I recommend that you allow a few days to visit this charming city.
