We are now approaching St Petersburg and begin the day sailing along the Svir River, passing through some locks, stopping at Mandrogi, where we had a shish-kebab party and ending the day in Lake Ladoga. The village is comparatively new, 1966, as the original village was burned down during WWII. What surprised me was the similarity of the carvings to the American Indians.
The Svir River is 215 kilometres long and connects the two largest lakes in Europe, lake Ladoga in the west and and Lake Onega in the east. The first settlements along the banks of the river and lakes date back to 3000 BC.
